BTW, below you find the configuration file which VNCviewer fails
to load ("Failed to get server address. Did you type the host
name correctly?"). Maybe it does not like the Host be specified
by IP address only? But I have only the IP address, nothing else...

[Connection]
Host=139.23.12.168:32
Password=...
[Options]
UseLocalCursor=1
UseDesktopResize=1
FullScreen=0
FullColour=1
LowColourLevel=1
PreferredEncoding=hextile
AutoSelect=1
Shared=0
SendPtrEvents=1
SendKeyEvents=1
SendCutText=1
AcceptCutText=1
Emulate3=0
PointerEventInterval=0
Monitor=\\.\DISPLAY1
MenuKey=F8

That's interesting. I experienced that once also, but I figured out
that .vnc was registered to my UltraVNC vncviewer.exe and not the
RealVNC version 4 viewer.exe. Try right-clicking the .vnc file that you
created and choose top "Open With". Browse for the vncviewer.exe that
exists with the version 4 of the server and tell it to open with that.

I believe that the difference is that the vnc4 viewer doesn't put in the
port=5900 in the config file and the vnc3 based viewers expect that.
Instead, the RealVNC 4 viewer just puts host:port as the host.

Hmm... no, to the best of my knowledge, that shouldn't be a
problem. I'm not
sure what the problem would be... since that appears to be a "live" IP
address (externally resolveable, that is) do you have a
firewall / router
between your workstation and the server? Can you PING that
host by IP?
Yes, I can.
If
you can ping it by IP, then you should have no problems
reaching it with
VNC by IP.
Oh, I can reach the VNC server - this is no problem. I just can't reach
it
by starting the config file.

If I just start the vncviewer and type in the password (the IP address
was memorized
from the last invocation, so I don't have to type it again), I am
connected.

It is just that it is inconvenient to always type the password. I have
to terminate
and restart the vncviewer often, because it looses the ability to
synchronize the
Windows clipboard from the X clipboard from time to time. Restarting the
Viewer
remedies this situation, and I have to ususally do this between 2 and 5
times per
working day.

I have in that directory two files. One is tightvncviewer.exe, and with
this
I get the aforementioned error message. The other one is vncviewer.exe,
and
with it I get a different error message: "unable to resolve host by
name".

Though the wording is different, I reckon that they both mean the same.

Verify that the VNCviewer.exe is the version 4 vncviewer. Also verify
that it is using the correct command line. See the archive link below for
details.

Ronald,

Are you sure that you don't have both VNC 3 and VNC 4 installed on the
computer in question? If you are running VNC Viewer 4 manually, saving a
.vnc file, but VNC Viewer 3 is registered to open .vnc files then you'll see
errors of this sort.

Cheers,

Ronald,

You are using an old VNC 4 release - you cannot drag & drop (or "Open
With...") VNC files to VNC Viewer 4.0, but you can to VNC Viewer 4.1.1. VNC
Viewer 3.3, on which TightVNC is based, does not support drag & drop opening
of .vnc files either.
